The President of Somaliland H.E Abdirahman Mohamed Abdilahi Irro yesterday held a high level meeting with a delegation headed by Mr. George Conway, the United Nations Deputy Special Representative of the General-Secretary, Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Somalia and Somaliland (DSRSG/RC/HC).
Mr. George Conway was accompanied by head of UN OCHA Blaise Kabonyo Mujika and other senior officials of the UN office in Somaliland.
During the meeting, George Conway congratulated the incumbent Somaliland President for his victory in the last presidential elections held in the country in 2024.
He also lauded Somaliland’s security, stability, democracy and applying the rules and int’l laws.
He reiterated that the UN will consolidate the longstanding and diligent work that the UN has with Somaliland.
On his part, the President spoke with George Conway on issues that are of high importance for the nation.
The issues that were high on the agenda of the talks include peace, stability, democracy, humanitarian aid, reviewing and assessing the projects the UN implements in Somaliland.
Irro told him that Somaliland which does not have an int’l recognition for 30 years, it has achieved to maintain security, peace, embracing multi-party politics based on state building which is rare to happen in the Horn of Africa where conflicts are widespread.
He further informed the UN Deputy Special Representative to Somaliland and Somalia that the funds the UN has allotted to Somaliland must be based on fairness and that Somaliland must receive its support and the funds it deserves.
He also recounted George Conway that Somaliland held several transparent election which were held in a peaceful manner.
The elections held were parliamentary, presidential and local councils.
He further added that Somaliland is gearing up to hold the upcoming elections which is slated to happen on time.
He reiterated that the current administration is committed to find a lasting resolution to the postponement of elections which are the basis of political disagreements in the country.
He further told the UN deputy representative that Somaliland is keen to establish reliable cooperation with UN. He said that Somaliland is ready to be part of dealing with the constraints in the Horn of Africa.
Irro said that UN must know the difference between Somalia and Somaliland.
He told that the UN must respect Somaliland on its official stance which is to decide for the future of its people and the country.
He further stated that Somaliland held a referendum where 90 percent of the people voted to secede from Somalia
