Somaliland criticizes the visit of UN delegation to Las Anod

Somaliland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has said that it received the news that a senior delegation led by the UN Deputy Special Representative to Somalia, Mr. George Conway, visited Las Anod, with the Somaliland government noting that visits of this nature follow mutually agreed diplomatic procedures.

In a statement that the Foreign Ministry released on Sunday, it disclosed that the Somaliland government is committed to facilitating the delivery of humanitarian aid to all communities in need, including the people living in Las Anod.

However, the Somaliland government informed the UN that visits by senior officials from the UN to Sool’s provincial capital, Las Anod-which it described as facing sensitive political and security situations—require prior consultation and travel authorization from Somaliland, involving prior notification, coordination, and joint planning.

Conversely, Somaliland Foreign Ministry further revealed that Somaliland is assessing the long-standing working cooperation with the UN, further pledging to continue the constant working collaboration.

“The government respectfully expects established diplomatic procedures and communication channels to be fully observed and respected.” the statement said

The statement released by Somaliland’s Foreign Ministry comes after the UN Deputy Special Representative to Somalia, Mr. George Conway, a delegation he led traveled to Las Anod. He is due to hold meetings with officials and the community to discuss the worsening humanitarian situation and community needs.
