Somalia’s opposition groups held a meeting in Mogadishu today and expressed their insistence that peaceful demonstrations will take place tomorrow. They will be protesting against the ongoing evictions and demolitions in the capital, accusing the Somali Federal government of forcibly evicting local residents from their settlements. Senator Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame, one of the politicians leading the protests, stated that the demonstrations will be peaceful and in defense of those who were evicted. He called on the public to participate and show solidarity with those who were illegally and forcibly evicted. Former Somali Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire also spoke out, saying that the protests will continue until the rights of those who have been affected are restored. He urged the security forces not to use violence against peaceful protesters. Mohamed Hussein Roble, another former Somali Prime Minister, emphasized the importance of standing up for the rights of the evicted people. He called on all citizens to participate in the demonstrations. The former Somali President, Shariif Sheikh Ahmed, who is the chairman of the opposition group and the Somali Future Council, stated that this year has been marked by land grabbing and evictions. He accused the government of failing to stop these actions and called on the public to join the planned demonstrations. The opposition leaders stressed that the protests will take place as scheduled in various parts of Banadir region and will remain peaceful, serving as a platform for the public to voice their grievances.
