The Turkish Ambassador to Somalia announced that Somalia will launch a satellite into space for the first time in 2027, noting that Turkey is collaborating with Somalia on space-related projects.
The ambassador stated that this plan would be implemented in the Warsheekh area, where a facility dedicated to satellite operations and space research will be established.
“If I had said five or ten years ago that one day Somalia would launch a satellite into space, many people might have laughed at us,” the ambassador said.
He noted that the progress made in security and diplomacy exemplifies the changes taking place in Somalia, pointing out that foreign diplomats are now present in Mogadishu—some accompanied by their children, who attend school within the city.
The ambassador also addressed the oil and natural gas exploration activities currently underway off the coast of Somalia, stating that teams conducting resource exploration are presently operating in Somali waters.
“I hope that when good news regarding the exploration results is received, you will remember us,” he said. Meanwhile, the ambassador stated that fishing vessels from Turkey are set to begin arriving in Somalia in October, noting that this is part of efforts to develop the fishing industry and the marine-based economy.
He remarked that Somalia stands to benefit significantly from its blue economy, highlighting that fisheries and marine resources could serve as vital economic assets.
The ambassador added that cooperation between the two nations would not be limited to the space, oil, and fisheries sectors; they are also planning major projects in mining, agriculture, road infrastructure, and urban connectivity across Somalia.
“What we discussed today reflects what we have achieved so far, but our aspirations and goals go far beyond that,” the ambassador said.
