Kenyan President William Ruto has reiterated that the border between Kenya and Somalia will remain closed until a lasting solution is found to balance security and trade. In an interview with journalists from Northern Kenya, Ruto stated that the reopening of the border is hindered by security concerns, economic losses from border protection, and the political situation in Somalia. He emphasized the need to maintain a strong balance between security and trade, noting that the Kenyan government has invested significant resources in border security and military operations in Somalia. Ruto also reaffirmed the presence of Kenyan troops in Somalia as part of the fight against armed groups, which he believes is crucial for the security of Kenya. The President further explained that the lack of a stable financial system supported by the international community has delayed the plan to reopen the border. He also acknowledged the political division in Somalia as a hindrance to efforts to strengthen security and cooperation in the region. Despite these challenges, Ruto emphasized the importance of cross-border trade and regional cooperation, citing organizations such as the East African Community, COMESA, and the African Continental Free Trade, which aim to facilitate trade and reduce border barriers. He stated, “Trade benefits all countries, and we must work towards reducing trade barriers.” In conclusion, Ruto stated that Kenya is still evaluating the possibility of reopening the border with Somalia, but it is crucial to maintain a balance between security and the economy.
