Puntland authorities in northern Somalia have announced that their security forces have successfully detained a group suspected of being pirates following security operations in the Bari region. These operations are part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the fight against pirate groups that have been active in Puntland’s coasts. Recent incidents of abductions and raids against commercial vessels in the Red Sea have prompted these actions. According to Puntland’s security officers, those detained are suspected of having ties to piracy networks that carry out abductions and attacks against commercial vessels. The Karkaar regional police boss has issued a stern warning to the public, stating that anyone who supports or cooperates with pirate groups will face legal consequences. Investigations will be conducted on the next of kin of suspected pirates or those with direct ties to these groups. Puntland authorities have expressed their concern about the frequent attacks by pirates, which could have a negative impact on the movement of ports and trade in the region. They have reassured that anti-piracy operations will continue, with measures being taken on land and at sea to prevent further attacks. These measures are aimed at curbing the activities of groups suspected of being involved in the recent revival of piracy attacks in the Red Sea and off the coasts of Somalia. While piracy raids in Somalia’s coasts have decreased in the past decade due to coordinated efforts with international partners and regional initiatives, recent incidents have caused renewed concern.
