On May 17, 2026, Mohamed Haji Omar Mohamoud, Somaliland’s first ambassador to Israel, will present his Letters of Credence to President Isaac Herzog, officially beginning his role as Somaliland’s Representative to Israel. Mohamed Haji was appointed in February and has been serving as an advisor to the President of Somaliland. He was also a member of the inner circle of officials who played a significant role in establishing the Israeli-Somaliland relations in 2025. This was a historic moment as Israel became the first UN member state to officially recognize Somaliland, a goal that the territory has been pursuing since declaring its autonomy from Somalia in 1991. Along with ambassadors from the Vatican, Australia, Korea, and Vietnam, Mr. Mohamed Haji will present his Letter of Credence. Prior to this role, Dr. Mohamed Haji served as Somaliland’s Representative to Taiwan, where he played a crucial role in strengthening cooperation in development, education, technology, and institutional capacity-building between the two sides.
