The Somali Federal Government officials and members of the Somali Future Council are facing mounting international pressure to return to the negotiation table and reach an agreement on the type of elections to be held in the country. The two sides recently held a three-day meeting in Halane Camp in Mogadishu, but were unable to come to a resolution on the key issues. Representatives from the international community, based in Halane Camp at Adden Adde Airport, are working to overcome divisions among political leaders and stakeholders in Somalia. The European Union (EU) Ambassador to Somalia, Francesco Di Mauro, met with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Puntland President Saed Deni last Saturday, and both expressed their willingness to continue the dialogue. In her statement, Di Mauro expressed hope that Somalis will reach a decision on resolving the political dispute and that the European Union is optimistic that an agreement will be reached soon. Sources say that the main opposition figure, former Somali President Shariif Sheikh Ahmed, has agreed to come to the negotiation table, and a meeting is expected to take place in Mogadishu with international community monitoring. Opposition politicians, who are members of the Somali Future Council, have also expressed their readiness to participate in genuine talks to resolve the current political standoff. However, there is pressure from the Somali President, who is accused of not being willing to compromise on the one-sided elections being implemented by his government. The exact timing of these elections is unknown. The United Nations Transitional Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS) is also playing a crucial role in urging the conflicting parties to agree on inclusive elections. The ongoing diplomatic efforts from the international community are aimed at seeking stability and effective government in Somalia. The country is facing a critical time as President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has extended his term, fueling the current political conflict. An agreement on inclusive elections will be vital for a peaceful power transfer in the country.
