The Hargeisa Local Government, in partnership with the DTGLOBAL–SINAAN initiative and funded by the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), has officially launched a large-scale Waste Management and Solutions Campaign aimed at improving sanitation across the capital.
The initiative, which was unveiled yesterday, will be implemented across all nine districts of Hargeisa as part of broader efforts to address growing concerns over waste accumulation and urban cleanliness.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, the Secretary of the Hargeisa Local Government, Mukhtar Mohamed Gahnug, announced that the campaign will initially start on key districts including Mohamud Haibe, Mohamed Moge, and Ahmed Dhagah.
He highlighted that the city has long relied on monthly clean-up exercises, traditionally held on the last Thursday of each month, to reduce waste levels. However, he said the new program will strengthen and expand these efforts to better manage the increasing waste burden facing the city.
“This campaign will help us manage the heavy pressure of waste we have been dealing with,” he said. “We extend our gratitude to the UK government for its financial support, and to DTGlobal and Sinaan, who are working with us to explore sustainable waste solutions, including recycling and possible waste-to-resource systems.”
According to the Local Government, the campaign will also introduce structured waste segregation at collection points, separating waste from households and food establishments such as hotels and restaurants. Technical experts will be involved to assess and guide the process to ensure efficiency and sustainability.
Officials emphasized that the initiative is not only focused on cleaning the city but also on transforming how waste is handled in the long term, including exploring opportunities for recycling and reuse.
“In the world today, waste is not simply dumped anywhere—it is reused and turned into value,” Mukhtar added, underscoring the shift toward sustainable waste management practices.
The campaign is expected to mark a significant step forward in improving public health, environmental cleanliness, and urban management in Hargeisa.
