Al-Shabaab is reported to have launched a series of attacks last night on positions and checkpoints by Kenyan security forces in Wajir, Garissa, and Mandera regions of the country’s northeast.
Reports from the area indicate that Al-Shabab fighters attacked a military camp in Qorof Xaraar, Wajir county, with heavy gunfire heard during the assault.
In Garissa County, the group reportedly attacked a military camp in Sareedo-located in the Dadaab area-as well as a nearby checkpoint.
Additionally, Al-Shabaab fighters reportedly destroyed a new security outpost in Biyo-Madoobe in the Fafi area; reports indicate that no troops were present at the site at the time of the attack.
Meanwhile, in Mandera county, Al-Shabab fighters reportedly attacked Kenyan forces stationed at Hareeri Suuki, an area falling under the jurisdiction of Ceel-qaaloow.
Al-Shabab has claimed to have inflicted casualties—both deaths and injuries-on Kenyan forces in these attacks, but so far no independent sources have confirmed the casualty figures.
These attacks come amidst increasing Al-Shabaab activities in parts of northeastern Kenya, particularly in areas near the Somali border.
