The African Union and the Somali gov’t have agreed that 2, 500 soldiers from Ethiopia’s National Defense Forces (ENDF) will be deployed to Somalia in order to serve in the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
According to a report issued by UN Security Council, Egypt is expected to deploy 1, 100 soldiers who will be part of the (AUSSOM) Mission in Somalia.
The exact number of troops that will be part of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), has not been officially confirmed but it is expected that the number will be less than 12, 000 soldiers except police officers and other security personnel.
Uganda will deploy 4, 500 soldiers to (AUSSOM) while Djibouti and Kenya will send 1, 500 and 1400 soldiers respectively.
The Somalia Operations Coordination Committee (SOCC) which coordinates military operations in Somalia officially confirmed the number of soldiers who will be joining (AUSSOM).
AUSSOM which replaced ATMIS at the beginning of this year is still an obstacle to the mission although it receives funds from the African Union (AU) and United Nations (UN).
A report issued in August, 2024, pointed out that less than 13,000 of the 20, 000 soldiers who are part of the ATMIS are stationed in Somalia.
AUSSOM is expected to operate until the end of 2028.
According to a report, at least hundreds of police officers from Egypt, Nigeria and Sierra Leone will be deployed to Mogadishu, Jawhar and Baidoa.
A statement from Somalia’s National Security Adviser has pointed out that operations jointly carried out by AUSSOM soldiers and Somali troops are underway in Somalia.
Al-Shabab surged its attacks in the last couple of months and the militants targeted the Somali President’s convoy with explosives.
