The State Foreign Minister, Mr. Ali Omar Bal’ad, has strongly refuted reports that a political meeting organized by the U.S. embassy in Mogadishu is scheduled to take place on May 13. He made these remarks during a debate held in X, stating that the U.S. embassy is not directly involved in the political dispute in Somalia. However, he did mention that members of the opposition are calling for international intervention. According to the Minister, there is no planned meeting or intervention from the U.S. embassy in Mogadishu. He also stated that the government has received letters from the opposition, requesting that pressure be put on the Somali Federal Government. The Minister clarified that the opposition has also sent a letter to the World Bank, asking for the suspension of economic support earmarked for Somalia. He compared this behavior to that of Somalia’s former warlords and urged the opposition to return to the political and democratic system. These statements from the Minister come after reports circulated on social media claiming that the U.S. embassy is leading efforts to bring the Somali Federal Government and the opposition to the discussion table on May 13.
