Kenya’s Minister of Health, Mr. Barre Aden Du’ale, reiterated his call for the reopening of the border between Kenya and Somalia on Monday. He stated that the prolonged closure of the border is hindering the Kenyan government from receiving revenue and conducting official inspections. Speaking at a graduation ceremony in Madarasa Manar in Waberi Ward, Garissa district, Du’ale noted that while trade and movement of people are still occurring unofficially, the official closure of the border is causing difficulties. He emphasized the potential for the border to generate revenue for the government and for immigration agencies to properly vet individuals. Du’ale also revealed that he has discussed the issue of the border closure with Kenyan President William Ruto and is optimistic that the border will be officially reopened. He stated, “We want the border to be reopened. We will continue our discussions with the President regarding the closure.” Du’ale argued that reopening the border will revive the economy in Garissa district and the entire northeastern region, as well as improve daily livelihood and community trade. He also highlighted the potential for increased government revenue, improved systems, and strengthened cooperation between Kenya and Somalia. In February of this year, President Ruto announced plans to reopen the border during a visit to Mandera, ending 15 years of closure. The President stated that the purpose of this move is to create trade opportunities, develop the economy in the northeastern region, and reunite families separated by the border closure.
