Certain countries and international agencies have expressed deep concern over the deteriorating political situation in Somalia. They are urging the Federal Government and the opposition to return to the negotiation table and reach a political settlement over the ongoing election impasse in the country. In a joint statement released on Monday, the signatories expressed their concerns over the escalating political disputes and management issues in Somalia. The international community is calling for an immediate resumption of dialogue and a political agreement on election plans to protect the interests of the Somali people. The statement also emphasized the readiness of the international community to support the ongoing dialogue led by the Somalis themselves. “At this critical time, we urge all Somali leaders to prioritize national interests and refrain from any actions that could escalate tensions,” the statement read. The joint statement was signed by countries such as the UK, the European Union (EU), the United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS), Germany, France, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, Netherlands, Ireland, Belgium, Finland, Poland, Portugal, and Spain. The joint statement was issued during a time of intense political debate in Somalia regarding the type of election to be held. There are growing calls for a political consensus to be reached in order to resolve the current standoff. The United States has urged all Somali political stakeholders to exercise self-control and refrain from actions that could incite violence. Additionally, the US has called on both sides to commit to continuing talks and working together to support peace and stability in Somalia. Somalia is currently facing political instability as opposition politicians strongly oppose the extension of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s government. The ongoing dispute over the country’s elections has sparked a political crisis that could potentially undermine the efforts of the Somali-led government to develop the state. The opposition politicians are demanding that an election be held as soon as possible. It is important to note that the US is one of the largest donors to Somalia, providing support in areas such as security, governance, and humanitarian issues.
