The Somali President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Wednesday has officially appointed Brigadier General Abdiwahab Abdilahi Omar as the new Chief of Somalia’s Coast Guards.
The President has given a particular consideration to the suggestion made by the defense ministry which encouraged the Head of State to appoint Abdiwahab as the Chief of the Coast Guards.
The Head of State has mentioned in the statement that the Somali government is committed to upgrade the quality of Somalia’s Coast Guards so to as to fully take over the security and the defense of Somalia’s territorial waters which is crucial for the nation and its unity.
He commended the outgoing Chief of Somalia’s Coast Guards Admiral Abdi Warsame for the huge work that he has done in the Coast Guards during his tenure.
He urged the incoming Chief of the Coast Guards to double his efforts in executing diligently the national duties bestowed upon him.
The Somali Federal Gov’t undertook efforts to rebuild country’s Coast Guards in order to ensure the security of Somalia’s territorial waters where piracy incidents and illegal fishing take place.
The last batch of the units of newly trained Coast Guards returned to Somalia in 2023 while completing training in Eritrea.
The European Union Naval Force (EUNAFOR) patrol Somali waters since 2008, to combat piracy and secure trade routes.
