The Peace and Life Political Party led by former Somali President, Mr. Mohamed Abdillahi Farmajo, has presented the type of elections which the party views as a way for Somalia to move past the current political standoff, after the party representatives attended the second round of election talks held in Mogadishu, where the Somali Federal Government and the opposition were in attendance.
The meeting was organized by the Turkish government which saw the attendance of the Somali Federal Government and Peace and Life political party representatives.
Western representatives such as Turkey, U.S., UK, EU, and the UN known as the Quartet were also in attendance.
Technical committees from the Peace and Life political party further revealed that the meeting focused on that the various parties must present the type of elections that is a number one priority for them and the best way forward for overcoming the current political deadlock.
The party further disclosed that the type of election they are proposing is based on ten criteria including:-
- An election that is easy for people to comprehend.
- An election that is trustworthy, transparent, and difficult to dispute.
- An election with a limited timeframe.
- An inclusive election in which every Somali who wishes to cast his or her vote can do so easily.
- An election where registration and voting take place at the same location and on the same day.
- An election where everyone votes for their preferred political party.
- An election for parliamentary seats based on the share of public votes each party receives.
- An election with administration and security arrangements that satisfy both the government and the opposition.
- An election that unites the Somali people and country, while safeguarding freedom and political independence.
- The Peace and Life Party is ready to accept anything the Somali people agree upon, provided that it does not harm the interest of the country and the people.
The Peace and Life Political Party further asserted that the type of election that they presented is the first that they prepared in 2018 during the term in office of the former Somali President, Mr. Mohamed Abdillahi Farmajo, in collaboration with the technical committees from the independent and boundaries election commission and other government institutions.
The Party further revealed that the election prepared earlier is the same type of election the federal government of Somalia seeks today.
