The Somali National Army in collaboration with international partners carried out an airstrike that took place in Goobo area, which lies 10 km north of Mahaas District in Hiiraan province, where Al-Shabab was reportedly mobilizing for war.
In a statement, the Ministry of Defense of Somalia said that the airstrike was conducted yesterday evening, stating further that 42 Al-Shabab members were successfully eliminated while 12 others suffered injuries.
The airstrike targeted specifically a location where members of Al-Shabab were regrouping after fleeing from clashes that took place in Sullaay and Waabweyn area.
The Ministry of Defense further disclosed that a combat vehicle and Al-Shabab’s defense positions that the group established in Goobo area had been destroyed.
The ongoing operations in Hiiraan province are part of the efforts that the Somali army together with local defense forces known as Ma’awisley intend to push back Al-Shabab.
Heavy defeat was inflicted upon the group during the operation, the Somali Federal government said.
In conclusion, the Ministry of Defense commended the Somali army and Ma’awisley forces for their significant role in the fight against Al-Shabab, and further expressed deep appreciation to the international partners for their continued support in the security operations in the country.
