The Jubaland authority has leveled serious accusations against the Somali Federal Government, claiming that it has confiscated or diverted fishing equipment that was meant to be distributed to Somalia’s regional states. During a press conference held in Kismayo, Jubaland’s administrative seat, the Minister of Fisheries revealed that the fishing equipment has not yet reached its intended destinations, which goes against previous agreements between the Federal Government and regional states. He expressed concern over the mismanagement of vehicles and other equipment allocated for international projects, stating that they have not been properly implemented in the regions of the country. He stated, “I am holding this press conference in my office to inform the Somali people about the violations regarding the equipment earmarked for the fishermen in the country. These violations have been recurring.” The Minister also disclosed that Jubaland has submitted a complaint to international agencies based in the country, such as the World Bank, alleging that important development projects have been misused. He further stated that funds meant for the acquisition of vehicles and other equipment for fishing communities in Somalia have not reached their intended destinations, and it is unfortunate that public funds have been embezzled. Jubaland has called on the World Bank to respond to these allegations and clarify how the project intended to support fishing communities in Somalia has been managed. The Minister also mentioned reports of government agencies in Somalia being involved in the mismanagement of equipment, but did not provide substantial evidence to support this claim. So far, the Somali Federal Government has not responded to these serious allegations, and political tensions between the Federal Government and regional governments have intensified due to disagreements over resource management and project implementation.
