Defense Minister expresses worry over the security of Mogadishu following the withdrawal of Burundi troops from Hawaadley settlement

The defense minister of Somalia’s Federal Gov’t, Ahmed Ma’alin Fiqi on Thursday has strongly spoken of the security of Mogadishu after the withdrawal of Burundian soldiers from Hawaadley settlement in Middle Shabelle province in which the militant group of Al-Shabab recaptured.

He expressed his worry over Al-Shabab’s capture of Hawaadley settlement in Middle Shabelle province. He said that the takeover of Hawaadley settlement poses a security threat to the capital Mogadishu.

He said: “It is not possible to say that foreign troops have withdrawn while Al-Shabab took it control. We cannot remain in Banadir region.”

He further added that the security of Mogadishu banks on the two Shabelle provinces. He stressed that we have to act swiftly in order to ensure the security of the capital.

He said: “The security of the capital relies on the two Shabelle provinces. These are the two areas that the security of Mogadishu can be protected. We cannot protect the security of the capital from Heliwaa, Kahda and Deyniile.”

He underlined that the Somali Federal Gov’t will commence swift operations which will be conducted in the border areas between Banadir and the two Shabelle provinces in order to eradicate the terrorist groups.

He called on the new Mayor of Mogadishu to support the fight against Al-Shabab. He urged the new Mayor of Mogadishu to fully support the armed forces which are engaged a fight with terrorist groups.
