The UK gov’t has officially announced on Monday that it has increased by 3.9 million US dollars to the funds earmarked for the Somali Stability Fund (SSF) which the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) manages it.
The Somali Stability fund pays the salaries of 18, 900 Somali National Army (SNA) and the Somali police force.
UK’s support is part of the ongoing efforts which are aimed to strengthen the security and the fight against the militant group of Al-shabab.
UK provided 6,000 tons of food and 2,000 fuel to be dispatched to the Somali army in 2024.
UK also successfully played a key role in the urgent transportation of 100 injured Somali soldiers who were wounded in line of duty.
The new funds allotted to UNSOS will support to pay the salaries of Somalia’s armed forces, and the fuel they need and the evacuation of injured soldiers in the frontlines.
UNSOS needs approximately 2 million dollars in a bid to support 20, 900 Somali soldiers which is in line to the UN Security Council Resolution 2767 (2024)
UK ambassador to Somalia, Mike Nithavrianakis has said: “The UK is a close ally of Somalia. I am pleased to announce the new funds while the Somali gov’t is fighting against the terrorist groups. I call on the int’l community to support Somali Stability Fund (SSF) in order to achieve peace and stability.
