To Whom It May Concern.
I am writing to you as a committed representative of Somaliland to express my concerns regarding the recent visit of the Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Somalia to Las ‘Anod.
This visit is not merely a diplomatic formality; it raises critical issues regarding the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Republic of Somaliland.
Such actions threaten our hard-won independence and overlook the historical context that has shaped our unique identity and governance.
Somaliland has a rich and complex history, significantly influenced by its colonial legacy. On June 26, 1960, we emerged from British colonial rule, marking a significant milestone in our quest for independence. Unfortunately, this independence was short-lived as we entered a union with Italian Somalia on July 1, 1960.
The ensuing years revealed significant disparities in governance and social structures, leading to conflict and civil strife that ultimately dismantled the union.
This tumultuous period culminated in our declaration of self-determination on May 18, 1991, a heartfelt affirmation of our identity, forged through struggle and a steadfast commitment to self-governance.
Currently, the Federal Republic of Somalia continues to assert claims over Somaliland’s sovereignty. It is crucial to recognize that Somaliland and Somalia are distinct entities, each with its own historical and political narratives.
The Prime Minister’s visit appears to be a strategic response to the growing movement advocating for our recognition, particularly following the overwhelming support for self-governance expressed by the people of Somaliland in the 2001 referendum.
His presence in Las ’Anod presents challenges to our aspirations for recognition and self-determination.
The implications of this visit extend beyond political discourse, they resonate deeply within our society and our ongoing quest for peace.
Somaliland has a longstanding tradition of resolving disputes through customary means, promoting reconciliation and unity among our diverse communities. We remain steadfast in our commitment to uphold peace and stability, both within our borders and in the broader regional context.
In light of the ongoing regional challenges, Somaliland is eager to engage constructively with the international community to foster stability and security in the region.
We believe that supporting efforts to achieve lasting peace in Somalia is essential, not only for Somalia itself but for the entire continent, while respecting our aspirations for Somaliland’s recognition.
It is imperative that we collectively address those who seek to undermine peace, acknowledging our shared responsibility for stability beyond our borders.
As we navigate these complex times, it is vital for the international community to recognize Somaliland’s legitimate aspirations for self-determination and to support our endeavors to foster peace and stability in the region. We remain committed to upholding our sovereignty and pursuing a peaceful and prosperous future.
Let us unite in our efforts to promote understanding, cooperation, and enduring peace in Somaliland and beyond, working collaboratively towards a brighter future.
The Republic of Somaliland is dedicated to strengthening partnerships with the international community and the Horn of Africa to enhance peace, stability, and regional cooperation. I propose that the Somaliland government facilitate dialogues addressing critical issues such as terrorism and regional conflict, which will have lasting implications for future generations.
Somaliland’s stance on regional dynamics is clear; we are prepared to fulfill our role as a constructive partner within the international community, safeguarding our interests and sovereignty while advocating for peaceful resolutions to the challenges we face. Together, we can strive for a stable and prosperous future for all.
Respectfully.
Ibrahim Adam Aw Qoobey.
