The highly-trained elite special operations unit of the Somali National Army- the Danab Commandos successfully eliminated 14 Al-Shabab fighters, after conducting a planned operation that took place in Kurtunwaarey district in Lower Shabelle region. A statement issued by the ministry of defense of Somalia said that the operation targeted areas where Al-Shabab Commanders and fighters were hiding. According to the statement, 14 Al-Shabab fighters have been successfully eliminated, while a cache of arms and military equipment were destroyed, in which the group used in planning and carrying out their attacks. The Ministry of Defense further articulated that the operation is part of the ongoing efforts in eradicating Al-Shabab members, who are accused of being responsible for their involvement in the insecurity and attacks against the Somali people. In the past months, the Somali Federal Government was committed in intensifying military operations against the Al-Qaeda-linked terrorist group, Al-Shabab, while the government forces along with local defense forces are carrying anti-Al-Shabab offensives in many settlements in southern Somalia. The defense ministry further stated that it will continue the operations in ensuring the security, stability, and the peace in the country.
