The Somali Military on Sunday confirmed that the Somali National Army (SNA) took control of Deynuunay settlement from Al-Shabab militants in Baay region.
Deynuunay is under the administration of Baidoa, the regional capital of Baay which lies 26 km East of Baidoa.
Al-Shabab militants took control of the settlement after Somali Army vacated Daynuunay two years ago.
The Somali troops did not attempt to liberate the settlement from Al-shabab although the troops conducted several operations there.
The 60th Division of the Somali National Army (SNA) issued a statement confirming that the Somali troops liberated the settlement from the al-Qaeda-linked terrorist group of Al-Shabab.
The Somali Military Command particularly the 8th Battalion which is part of the 60th Division of the Somali National Army (SNA) took over the settlement which Al-Shabab controlled for the past two years.
The statement went on to say that the operation was led by the Commander of the 8th Battalion particularly the 60th Division, Lieutenant Hassan Ali Sanweyne.
The Somali Military established military base in Deynuunay to protect the security of Baidoa, the administrative seat of Southwest State.
The Somali troops withdrew from Daynuunay in December, 2022 after Al-Shabab militants launched an attack against Somali troops stationed there.
Al-Shabab conducted relentless attacks against Somali troops that were stationed in Deynuunay.
Al-Shabab militants sees the settlement as a strategic location.
After Al-shabab militants attacked Deynuunay for several times, the Somali army vacated it.
