Puntland’s mobile reserve and Riot Police staged a protest this morning at the 54th Command on the outskirts of Garowe, where they have recently been receiving training. Initial reports suggest that these troops are complaining about issues related to their rights being denied. It has been explicitly stated that these troops have been armed with heavy weapons and intend to join Puntland’s forces. Security sources report that these troops have restricted movement inside and outside the camp, making it difficult to enter or exit the Command. Witnesses also reported sporadic gunshots heard inside the camp, but no damage has been confirmed as a result of the army’s attack. Puntland has not yet officially addressed these protests or the reasons behind them. However, various reports indicate that efforts are being made to calm the tension and talks are underway to resolve the complaints of these forces. In Puntland, the number of soldiers revolting due to lack of pay has increased, as many have signed up for the Federal Government of Somalia in order to receive their salaries. Yesterday, over 350 former soldiers from Puntland appeared at a military camp in Jarriiban district in the Mudug region, as these forces were taken over by the Federal government.
