The National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), on Friday revealed in a statement that airstrikes were carried against Al-Shabab militants in Sabiib and Caanoole surroundings in Lower Shabelle region.
NISA confirmed that 82 Al-Shabaab members including senior leaders were killed in the strike while 19 others were seriously injured.
The airstrikes were aimed at neutralizing the threat posed by the al-Qaeda-linked terrorist group of Al-Shabab.
The series of airstrikes were a direct response after Al-Shabab militants attacked a military base manned by Somali National Army (SNA) and engaged one of the fiercest battles with the militant group.
NISA’s statement went on to say that the operations were intended to dismantle the operational capacity of the militant group.
NISA received information in advance that Al-Shabab militants were attempting to disrupt the stability in Sabiib and Caanoole areas.
NISA sent a stern warning to the Somali populace to stay away from areas that Al-Shabab fighters are hiding which is a target for the Somali National Army (SNA).
Airstrikes and ground assaults against Al-Shabab militants intensified in Lower Shabelle region.
The objective behind the operations are aimed at eliminating the threat posed by the group.
