Somali President Extends an invitation to the opposition politicians to attend a meeting

Somalia’s President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud yesterday announced that he extended an invitation to opposition politicians and civilian leaders to attend a meeting. He stated that the meeting will officially kick-off in Mogadishu on June 15, 2025. A statement from the office of the President stated that while considering the importance of consultations in respect to the national interest, the President will continue to hold meetings which will pave the way for the summit.

The statement went on to say that the summit will focus on issues that are a priority to state-building including security and the eradication of terrorism, democracy and elections, completion of the constitution, unity and genuine reconciliation.

The politicians and other members invited are urged to prepare for this upcoming meeting which is crucial when it comes to state-building.

The statement revealed that the opposition groups and other members must play a vital role when it comes to the meeting which is crucial to state-building, and are urged to accept the official invitation that the Head of State has extended.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud announced the date that the meeting will be held days after the opposition politicians convened a meeting in Mogadishu for the past couple of days.

Opposition politicians are keen that the upcoming 2026 elections will be inclusive, and free and fair. They have expressed their worry the way that the current government is trying to hold the upcoming elections.

The mounting pressure from the opposition politicians and the int’l community which pressurized the gov’t led by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud expedited holding the summit which the gov’t dragged its feet.

Friends of Somalia exerted maximum efforts in order the gov’t and the opposition to hold elections that are agreed upon.

The incumbent President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s stance was to hold one-man one-vote in the country without respecting the opposition that is strongly against the gov’t stance.
