Somalia’s elite, U.S.-trained special operations and counterterrorism force within the Somali National Army-Danab Commandos carried out a planned operation and successfully eliminated 14 Al-Shabab members.
The counterterrorism operation specifically took place in the Buulo Fulaay area in the Bay region last night.
The Somali forces destroyed Al-Shabab hideouts during the operation, an official statement from the Defense Ministry of Somalia said.
The operation is part of the counterterrorism operations that Somali forces are carrying out in the country, which are aimed at targeting Al-Shabab, and bolstering security and stability in the country.
The Ministry of Defense and the Military Command commended the Somali forces that participated in the operation, noting that operations against the militant group of Al-Shabab will continue until peace and lasting security are achieved.
The operation took place days after fighters loyal to the former Southwest State President and Al-Shabab fighters that colluded with them launched attacks on Baidoa and managed to enter the city where they engaged in skirmishes with the Somali Federal Forces in armed clashes that lasted for several hours.
Ever since Adan Madobe assumed the presidency in Southwest State, the security in Baidoa deteriorated while rival armed groups launched attacks on the city several times.
