The Jubaland regional administration has condemned with the strongest possible terms an incident in which Turkish drones carried out an airstrike last night in Dolow District in Gedo region, accusing Ankara of being directly involved in the political conflict in Somalia. Jubaland authorities further disclosed that the airstrike specifically targeted the residential house of former Commander of Custodial Corps of Somalia’s Federal Government, General Mahad Abdirahman Adan known as “Shub”, further arguing that the reason for targeting him was that he had a political difference of opinion with in the Federal Government.
Two missiles were launched on the house, while one of the missiles struck the District Commissioner’s house in Dolow District, an official statement from Jubaland’s Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism said. It further revealed that General Mahad Abdirahman Adan and four other civilians sustained injuries resulting from the airstrike. It described the airstrike as a war crime, noting that the town of Dolow has been devoid from acts of insecurity for more than ten years. It called on accountability from the President of the Somali Federal Government, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud-who, it described as “a president whose term has expired—and from Turkish government, stating that the drone which carried out the airstrike belonged to it. It accused Ankara of using its military might against one of the factions contending over Somalia’s political affairs.
It called on the UN, AU, IGAD, U.S., and EU to pay special attention to what it described as “unusual actions involving Turkey” within Somalia. It also called on the UN to review the decision to lift the arms embargo on Somalia, arguing that weapons should be entrusted to a responsible government and institutions authorized to use them. It stated that Ankara’s actions could undermine its future role in mediating and seeking solutions to Somalia’s political disputes. It argued that Turkey fully aligns itself with a specific side, it could be difficult to view as a mediator in efforts to reconcile Somalia’s political factions.
