Police Release four journalists from custody in Mogadishu

Security Forces in Mogadishu released last night four practicing journalists from police detention after they spent hours in police captivity.

The journalists were working for 5TV and were arrested from the television headquarters yesterday.

The security forces did not inform them the reason for their apprehension.

Lawmaker Adan Osman Hussein alias Qoryooley who is a member of Somalia’s Federal Parliament criticized the arrest of the journalists with the strongest possible terms.

The MP’s critics is believed to have expedited the release of the journalists from police captivity and the lawmaker is thought to have a great influence in the Somali Federal Gov’t.

Lawmaker Adan Qoryooley who is elected from a constituency in Galmudug state is said to have close ties with Villa SOmalia.

The security agencies did not cite the reason for the apprehension of the journalists.

Police in Banadir province detained the four journalists with a clear ground and later released from police custody without taking them to court.

Ahmed Mohamud Raas, Mohamed Ahmed Rooraaye, Mohamed Abdi Afgoye and Eng. Dahir Dayax are the names of the released journalists from police detention.

Police intensified crackdown against practicing journalists who are detained for no clear motive.

Somalia is among the most dangerous countries when it comes to journalists who face threats, arrest, torture, and some time murder while they are on duty.
