The National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) said that it successfully eliminated at least eight Al-Shabab members including senior commanders after conducting a planned operation that took place on the outskirts of Basra area in Lower Shabelle region.

According to a statement released by the agency, the operation precisely targeted a place where Al-Shabab members were holding a meeting that was situated on the banks of Shabelle River on the outskirts of Basra. The agency reported that senior Al-Shabab commanders killed were among a commander, who was responsible for plots involving landmines, and the commander who was responsible for the group carrying out mortar attacks.

The commander named Ahmed Eybka Aalim known as Daqare was responsible for launching mortar attacks. He was killed along with six other members of the militant group of Al-shabab. NISA highlighted that the agency inflicted heavy defeat on the network that was in charge of the group for planning and conducting mortar attacks.

The statement further added that the intelligence reports confirmed that the group transported the dead bodies of the commanders killed in the operation and secretly buried in another settlement.

The agency noted that the operation is part of the ongoing efforts in weakening the operational capabilities of Al-Shabab and dismantling the networks specialized in carrying out terrorist attacks. In conclusion, NISA appealed to the public to share information relating to security threats or Al-Shabab and ISIS’s activities.
