Al-Shabab fighters attack military base near Afgoye district

Al-Shabab on Thursday has attacked a military base in Sabiib and Caanoole areas near Afgoye district in Lower Shabelle region.

The militant group attacked the base using an explosive-laden vehicle driven by a suicide-bomber.

The two sides engaged in a fight by exchanging gunfire that lasted for hours.

Local residents confirmed that there were heavy casualties including deaths and injuries.

Tension is reported to be running high as movement of troops are reported in Afgoye district in Lower Shabelle region.

The gov’t of Somalia has not so far released a statement regarding the attack.

Al-Shabab surged its attacks against military bases manned by Somali troops stationed in Lower and Middle Shabelle regions.

On Tuesday, Al-shabab detonated a car bomb targeting Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s convoy.

The explosion claimed the life of security forces, journalist and citizens.
