The Somaliland Medical Association (SLMA) has issued a health alert regarding Ebola, urging the public to exercise heightened vigilance and to follow the health guidelines provided by the relevant authorities.

In a press release issued on October 18, 2026—calling for vigilance against Ebola and the protection of public health—the association stated that it is closely monitoring the Ebola outbreak in Kenya, a country with which Somaliland maintains active commercial, social, and travel ties.

The association noted that while there is no evidence of Ebola cases in Somaliland, it remains essential to stay vigilant and implement preventive measures to safeguard public health.

The SLMA further expressed its support for the efforts of the Somaliland Ministry of Health Development and other relevant agencies regarding preparedness, prevention, and the control of infectious diseases.

Symptoms and Nature of Ebola

The Somaliland Medical Association reminded the public that Ebola is a dangerous infectious disease. It is transmitted through contact with the blood or bodily fluids of an infected person—or someone who has died from the disease—as well as through contact with objects contaminated by such fluids. Symptoms of the disease include sudden fever, headache, muscle pain, severe fatigue, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. In some cases, bleeding may also occur.

The organization noted that these symptoms can resemble those of other diseases; therefore, it is essential that any individual suspected of having the illness be referred for a medical evaluation and formal testing.

A message to the public

The Somaliland Medical Association has advised the public to follow the official guidelines and announcements issued by the Somaliland Ministry of Health Development, and to refrain from spreading unverified information regarding the disease.
