103 MP’s of Lower and Upper House of parliament call on the President to step down

Opposition members of Lower and Upper House of Somali Federal Gov’t on Thursday called on the incumbent Somali President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to step down. More than 103 MP’s made their call in a press statement they issued. They accused the president of clearly violating the country’s constitution. They also levelled allegations that he failed to discharge his responsibilities while the country is in a difficult situation.

The MP’s said in the statement that the president has neglected his constitutional duties when the country is faced with challenges in the areas of security, economy, humanitarian, and therefore, he has to step down. As they pointed out, the President has not exerted maximum effort in order to deal with the current situation.

They revealed that the President put in place politics that are aligned with his political organization. The MP’s said in the statement that President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has not lived up to his promises he made on March 29, 2025 in which he pledged to bring together political and traditional leaders in order to hold national dialogue.

They also accused of him that he deviated from the path of stability and to bring the people together. The MP’s alleged the president that he removed the independence of gov’t institutions. They disclosed that he committed corruption, and widespread mismanagement which strained the relationship between the gov’t officials and the public.

The MP’s stated that many agreements were signed covertly on behalf of the Somali gov’t while these agreements were not shared with the parliament and the public. They indicated that this is a clear violation of the constitution of the country which could lead legal action will be taken against him including that he will be removed from the presidency.

They also alleged the president that he dismantled the National Consultative Conference (NCC) which was a crucial forum in which political rows in the country were resolved. They said the president has put political pressure on regional administrations like Puntland and Jubaland. The MP’s confirmed in the press statement that they see a constitutional duty to stand up to defend the nation and the laws of the country to be complied with. They demanded that the President must resign in order to save the country, and to form new leadership that can overcome the current obstacles.
