NEC Postpones Parliament & Local Council Poll in Somaliland

Somaliland has to delay its parliament and local council polls.

SL National Electoral Commission (NEC) made the announcement on Thursday that Proceeding with the election as scheduled is no longer feasible.

The upcoming parliamentary and local council polls were scheduled to transpire in Somaliland in December this year.

In a press conference held in Hargeisa, NEC chair, Honorable. Abdikadir Iman Warsame has further said that the poll delay will be shared with the president and election stakeholders.

The three political national parties in Somaliland recently hammered a historic accord in which they settled election dispute and the agreement which is to see the increase of NEC members from 7 to 9 will be tabled at the parliament.

The Election Commission announced that according to the prevailing time frame is not conducive to the holding of free and fair poll.

The House of Elders extended the term for the Lower House of Parliament but the local council polls which its term expired still in office.
