Somali gov’t troops backed by local Ma’awisleey clan militia, on Friday killed dozen Al-shabab fighters during intense fighting that occurred in Hiiran region.
The fighting broke out after allied troops launched an offensive targeting fortified Al-shabab positions along the Shabelle River, specially in Jicibow area, a strategically significant location.
Hiiran Regional Governor, Muse Salad Weheliye confirmed that the operation succeeded.
He added that key Al-Shabab leaders and fighters were elimnaited during the operation.
The latest offensive follows weeks of intense fighting between Beera Yabaal and Jicibow, two key areas along the Shabelle River’s banks. The region has been the site of ongoing military efforts to dismantle al-Shabaab’s network and secure key trade and agricultural routes vital to the local population.
