A vehicle belonging to the Kenyan police was struck by a suspected landmine while traveling on the road connecting Saretho and Dadaab in Garissa County, an area where security concerns persist.
The police commander of the Xagardheere station and his driver were killed when a landmine blast hit their vehicle at dawn on Friday, according to local reports.
The incident reportedly occurred around 6:00 a.m., when a Toyota Land Cruiser from the Xagardheere police station drove over an explosive device suspected to be a landmine.
Both men reportedly died at the scene, and the vehicle was extensively damaged by the explosion.
Security forces arrived at the site, secured the area, and launched follow-up operations. However, the exact circumstances surrounding the blast remain unclear, and there has been no official statement regarding who was responsible.
Local reports have pointed to the possibility that the armed group Al-Shabaab was involved in the attack. The road connecting Saretho and Dadaab is vital for the movement of traffic, the transport of supplies, and the operations of security forces in Garissa County, located in northeastern Kenya near the Somali border.
The region has previously experienced several attacks targeting security forces and other vehicles, heightening concerns regarding road safety and the movement of traffic in the border area.
