Somalia’s President Confers with AU Commission Chairperson

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud on Sunday received the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Yousuf, who is currently on two-day official working visit to Somalia. During the meeting, the two sides agreed to consolidate the strategic cooperation between the African Union and Somalia. Hassan Sheikh lauded the role the African Union is playing when it comes to the pacification efforts, rebuilding governance, and strengthening the internal security in Somalia.

He stated the bravery and resilience that the African Union Peace Keeping troops in Somalia showed. He reiterated that the Somali gov’t is committed to fight terrorist groups who are committing horrific acts of atrocities against the Somali populace which is against the existence and development of the country. He lauded that the regional countries increased their efforts to support the ongoing operations against the terrorist groups.

He said: ” As for the terrorist groups, there is no safe haven in Somalia. The country and the people are staunchly against them. We will achieve to eliminate the terrorist groups. We will stop them from looting and killing the Somali populace.”

The two sides agreed to develop economic cooperation, rebuilding Somalia’s robust institutions, and strengthening the security of the region in order to ensure lasting peace and stability. The President stated that Somalia is committed to play an active role when it comes to the process of reforming the African Union. He said that Somalia would offer its expertise ending conflicts to the African countries.
