IGAD Welcomes Comprehensive Cooperation Agreement Inked by Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia

Addis Ababa September 10/2018 IGAD welcomed the recent positive political developments in the Horn of Africa region, particularly the signing of the Joint Declaration on the Comprehensive Cooperation between Ethiopia, Eritrea and Somalia.

It also welcomed the constructive engagement towards normalization of relations between Djibouti and Eritrea.

“These developments take place in the backdrop of a positive wind of change across the region,” IGAD noted, and commended the wise and visionary leadership of the region.

Furthermore, IGAD looks forward the full normalization of relations between all the countries of the region and the realization of the shared aspiration for sustainable peace and development of the region, indeed the whole of Africa.

IGAD assured to continually support all efforts that may contribute to moving forward the process of normalization of relations between Djibouti and Eritrea and the search for sustainable peace and development of the region.

 

It is to be recalled that following the signing of the Joint Declaration Agreement on Comprehensive Cooperation by leaders of Ethiopia, Somalia and Eritrea, in Asmara Foreign Ministers of the three countries arrived in Djibouti and resolve the ten-year old dispute between Eritrea and Djibouti through peaceful dialogue and negotiation.

Eritrea is expected to rejoin IGAD, at an event to be held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia next week.

Eritrea poised its IGAD membership in 2007 and rejoined the bloc in 2011, however, it suspended its association with IGAD last year.
