The al-Qaeda-linked terrorist group of Al-Shabab is conducting activities in Jilib District of the Middle Jubba region, and is mobilizing its armed militias in a bid to prevent the Somali troops who are advancing towards in the area and are expanding its presence in Lower Juba region. Reports confirm that Al-Shabab fighters with a number of military vehicles moved towards Hagar District of Lower Jubba region late Sunday afternoon, so that the Somali troops who are scattered in the dense forests of Miido area do not reach the district. Miido is under Afmadow district. Reports further disclose that Al-Shabab is mobilizing other militias, who are expected to send them towards Cagbarur road, to thwart the attack on Qalawilah area, which is a major road that links Jilib and Afmadow districts. Sources indicate that Al-Shabab are using their militias as reinforcements that recently retreated from areas captured by the Somali troops. Al-Shabab’s main goal is to maintain control of the strategic area of Qalawilah, which is important for the movement of Jilib, Afmadow and Hagar. The Somali National Army with the support of Jubaland Dervish forces that are stationed in an area not far from Qalawilah, their arrival there is a huge burden on the security of Jilib district. Locals in Jilib tell you that the ongoing operations that are extending to the border of Jubba region has created fear and panic in the city. The Somali troops are carrying out strong offensive including ground and airs assaults, targeting Al-Shabab centers in the two regions. The international partners, who are supporting the Somali troops in the area have caused Al-Shabab to lose their control of several areas in the last few days. Al-Shabab sees this operation as critical and has security consequences for their presence in the Middle Jubba region, which is the only region in the country that is fully under the control of Al-Shabab. The district of Jilib is the main center controlled by Al-shabab, and this is what causes them to try to defend it. The Somali troops previously have not put this kind of pressure on Jilib before for more than 18 years that the militant group of Al-Shabab has been in control of the area.
