Somalia, US agree to cooperate on the fight against terrorism

Somali President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud held a high level meeting in Mogadishu with the current Commander of U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), General Michael E. Langley.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed ways to consolidate the cooperation in the area of security between Somalia and the United States.

The incumbent Somali President reiterated the importance of focusing on the expedition of the joint efforts which are aimed to eradicate the militant group of Al-Shabab, and strengthening the coordination of the operations pertaining to the broad cooperation in which AUSSOM is part of it.

On the other hand, Somali Defense Minister, Ahmed Ma’alin Fiqi, accompanied by the Army Chief, General Odowaa Yusuf Raage, held a high level meeting with U.S. Ambassador to Somalia, Richard H. Riley, and the Commander of AFRICOM, General Michael H. Langley, accompanied by top brass officers of AFRICOM Command.

The officials focused on their discussions the expedition of the joint operations in combating extremist groups like Al-Shabab and ISIS which pose a threat to the stability of Somalia and the region in general.

They also discussed ways to develop the ongoing operations and to upgrade the quality of the Somali National Army (SNA) through trainings, providing equipment and sharing intelligence regarding the fight against terrorism.

Finally, the defense minister, Ahmed Fiqi, expressed thanks to the U.S. Gov’t for the constant support it provides to Somalia in particular the rebuilding of the Somali National Army (SNA), airstrikes, and the support they provide when it comes to the liberation of the settlements and to restore the hope of the Somali people.
