The U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) announced that it conducted an airstrike in Puntland State, targeting ISIS fighters. The strike took place in mountainous areas approximately 30 miles southeast of the port city of Bosaso in the Bari region. A statement released by AFRICOM on Saturday stated that the airstrike occurred on April 17, as part of an increase in U.S. airstrikes in Somalia. However, AFRICOM did not provide further details or announce the number of casualties, citing a U.S. policy in effect since last year. The U.S. is also conducting airstrikes in southern Somalia, where intense clashes between government troops and Al-Shabab fighters took place last week. Despite a decrease in U.S. airstrikes in Somalia due to the ongoing conflict between the U.S., Israel, and Iran in the Middle East, AFRICOM is determined to surpass the record set by President Donald Trump of 124 airstrikes.
