Somaliland Minister of the Interior Mohamed Kahin Ahmed said on Wednesday authorities would break up opposition-called “illegal” protests against the government’s alleged attempts to serve beyond its mandate.
Kahin ordered regional troops to further tighten security ahead of opposition-called nationwide demonstrations aimed at pressuring the government to hold the presidential election on Nov. 13, despite the incumbent president’s insistence that votes for political parties would be held first.
“Anyone who attempts to undermine security in the guise of illegal protest would face legal action and the organizers will be held responsible for the consequences,” Somaliland Interior Minister said.
