In a meeting held at Mogadishu airport, the leaders of Somalia, Ethiopia, Djibouti and Kenya agreed on joint military campaign aimed at “destroying” the Al-Qaeda-linked militant group Al-Shabaab, a communiqué said on Wednesday.

Main roads in the Somali capital were closed on Wednesday and hundreds of troops were deployed in an attempt to tighten security ahead of the arrival of the leaders of neighboring countries.

A number of mortar shells landed at the gate of the presidential complex early in the morning, according to Caasimada Online news website. Casualties have not been immediately known.

A communiqué issued by Somali President and the leaders of neighboring countries of Djibouti, Ethiopia and Kenya said the operations are aimed at preventing Al-Shabaab from infiltrating into the wider region.

It came after a pause in operations against the group over the past days due to insufficient number of troops to man areas seized from the rebels.
