Parents of thousands of Somali soldiers missing in Eritrea accused Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of dragging his feet to return their sons home and threatened protests against his administration.

Speaking to local media on Wednesday, the parents called for “massive” demonstrations against Mohamud’s government and called on authorities to return the missing soldiers immediately.

Some of the parents said escapees from the Eritrean training camps told them that their sons had been subjected to degrading and inhumane treatment. The families said some of the sons had died and others disabled while many are suffering mental trauma.

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who had promised to return the missing soldiers months earlier, has not yet commented on renewed calls from the parents.
