Reports from Middle Shabelle region confirm that heavy fighting broke out in Biyo-Adde district between Somali troops backed by local clan fighters and Alshabab militant group.
Reports further said that the two sides used all kinds of heavy weapons and local residents told that they heard heavy weaponry and gunfire exchanged by Somali troops and Al shabab fighters.
Pictures circulated in the social media showed parts of the district which was on fire as Alshabab fighters detonated explosives which caused massive destruction and parts of the district was on fire.
Somali National Army intensified its ground assaults which were aimed at driving out Alshabab remnants from the district.
Besides the ground assault carried out by Somali troops backed by allied clan fighters, the Somali gov’t conducted airstrikes targeting Alshabab hideouts in the district.
Detials are sketchy as the exact number of casualties of both sides are not known.
The situation in Biyo-Adde district remains tense.
The Somali gov’t has not so far issued a statement regarding the fierce clashes that erupted between gov’t troops and AlShabab terrorist soldiers.
