The DARE1 consortium has landed cables in Somalia’s two largest coastal cities, Mogadishu and Bosaso.

The landings are an important step for the DARE1 cable project spearheaded by the consortium, which consists of Djibouti Telecom, Somtel and Telkom Kenya. The DARE1 cable features a three-fibre-pair trunk, with the Bosaso branch running for 108km.

The cable network is expected to go live by June 2020, and will cover four cities across three countries – Djibouti’s eponymous capital, Bosaso and Mogadishu in Somalia, and Mombasa in Kenya. It will span around 5000km, with capacity of 100Gbps.

Ships laying the cable recently provoked the wrath of Somaliland authorities for entering their territorial waters without permission. However, the dispute seems to have settled.
