The Danab Commandos, a Special Elite Force of the Somali National Army, have increased their operations in the settlements surrounding Kismayo, the provincial capital of Jubaland administration. According to sources, these operations are aimed at maintaining security and were launched after receiving intelligence reports of Al-Shabab’s attempts to reorganize and take control of some settlements. The Danab Commandos are working alongside other forces from Jubaland, as confirmed by security officers. The ongoing operations are focused on checking for explosive devices and landmines on major roads, as well as searching for Al-Shabab fighters hiding in villages. The operations officially began on Monday and have already shown tangible success in the Lower Jubba region. In addition, the Somali National Army (SNA) and local defense forces known as Ma’awisley have started movements in Mataban district in Hiiraan province, with plans to resume anti-Al-Shabab offensives in the area. Just two days ago, the Commander of Land Forces addressed hundreds of soldiers, outlining plans to launch anti-Al-Shabab operations and eliminate the group from settlements in Hiiraan province. The movements of allied troops have been observed in areas controlled by Al-Shabab, including Mahaas and Moqokori, which the group took control of in 2025. Reports indicate that the group has deployed a large number of fighters to Mahaas, a strategic town that connects Hiiraan and Galguduud regions.
