Somaliland pardons 574 inmates due to fears of COVID-19

The President of Somaliland has pardoned 574 prisoners on Wednesday due to the spread of the deadly coronavirus outbreak.

In  a presidential decree, Presidnt Musa Bihi Abdi ordered the attorney general to free 574 prisoners all across the state starting on Wednesday.

“The move is meant to contain the spread of COVID-19 pandemic and those who are due to be release are nonthreatening and low crime inmates,” said a statement from the president’s office.

Somaliland had announced that a Chinese national and a Somali citizen who traveled back from Britian had tested positive for the coronavirus on Tuesday.

Somaliland closed all its land borders in a bid to contain the spread of COVID-19.
