Somalia on Wednesday announced it had shut down 12 media sites it said were propagating Al-Shabab information, in the latest crack down on violent extremism.
The Somali Federal Gov’t previously succeeded in closing 30 Al-Shabab linked websites across the internet.
The Somali authorities also seized critical information and identified individuals involved in operating these outlets, as well as those who provided financial support to the activities.
Thousands of social media accounts affiliated with the Jihadist group in which they created files and posts were destroyed.
This disrupted the group’s capacity to spread propaganda online.
The gov’t of Somalia vowed to further continue its efforts to dismantle all forms of media used by the Khawarij and other extremist groups.
The Somali gov’t previously issued a directive instructing the communication companies to stop sites that are sympathetic to Al-Shabab.
The Somali government’s ministry of communication and technology said it had switched off prominent Al-Shabab sites.
