Military officials said on Thursday that its forces thwarted an attack on military base in the outskirts of Bal’ad by alshabab who had launched pre-dawn attack in the town which is located 30 km from Mogadishu.
According to the local residents, it is reported that there was a heavy fighting that erupted between Somali National Army (SNA) and Alshabab fighters.
Reports further confirm that the two sides used all kinds of heavy weapons and residents told local media that they heard heavy weaponry and gunfire between the terrorists and government troops.
Unconfirmed reports say that Alshabab fighters managed to take control parts of the town, and released a number of inmates from Bal’ad prison.
Later reinforcements from Somali troops reached the town and successfully drove out Alshabab fighters from the town.
A short statement from the government said that the Somali National Army (SNA) taught Alshabab fighters a lesson after the group launched an attack on military base manned by gov’t troops in the town’s outskirts.
The situation remains tense as far as the confrontations between gov’t troops and Alshabab fighters are concerned.
